Way back in time, when maps still had ominous white spaces and fearsome creatures ruled the high seas, back in the times of tall ships with bright sails, the yonder world was very far away, outlandish and alien beyond belief. The great explorers of those times were real men, and their wives were strong and used to loneliness.
But the yearning for distant and exotic places, the longing to wake up somewhere far, far away is still in us. Small things can trigger this fascination: an old globe, a sextant, weatherworn binoculars. Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Shackleton are beckoning to set sails, to leave the familiar and head for the unknown. Danger guaranteed, safe return doubtful.
